of July, I have the honour to submit for Your Lordship's

consideration the question of paying Mr. W. Chatham some

gratulty in consideration of the extra work that has been

thrown upon him in consequence of Mr. P. N. H. Jones'

transfer to the Gold Coast and of Mr. J. 7. Boulton's

absence on sick leave.

The work of the Director of

Public Works is at all times very heavy. Mr. Boulton went

on leave on the 13th. of April and Mr. Jones left on the

5th. of May. For over 5 months Mr. Chatham has been

carrying on the work of his office single-handed. The

result has been that in addition to working at very high

pressure, as he informs me, during office hours he
